Selangor will need 150,000 workers for five mega projects

BANTING, May 2 — Selangor may require 150,000 workers when it carries out five mega projects under its RM50 billion economic stimulus package, said Mentri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.

He said the projects comprised the development of rivers, towns, light rail networks and broadband communication systems as well as the rehabilitation of stalled housing projects.

The jobs would be created in stages with phase one involving technical fields such as engineers, draughtsmen and surveyors, he told reporters after launching the Sijangkang Entrepreneurship and Agriculture Carnival here today.

He said the first batch of workers would be recruited in June when the projects begin and priority would be given to those who had been laid off.

Khalid said that in the last three months, 3,000 people in Selangor lost their jobs but nearly 65 per cent of them had been offered work at other companies while the rest were offered places at skills training institutes.

"Generally, the problem of worker retrenchment has been overcome in Selangor," he said. — Bernama
